I traveled back to Pennsylvania from Washington DC for the Thanksgiving holiday last week. I love going home to my parents house because my mom and I get to hunt around thrift stores and flea markets for antiques. This visit however, I came up with a great find straight from her basement! Sometimes the best finds are already at home.

This feedsack, that held grain for hens, was manufactured in the city I was born in; Allentown, Pennsylvania. I also went to high school in the town of Northampton, Pennsylvania which is also stamped on the bag. The patina and wear on the bag is perfect while the screen print is still crisp. I currently have it hanging in my kitchen in DC and it reminds me of home.

I am ashamed that I have not posted anything in two months! To ramp up again I thought I would share a really fun DIY project I made this morning. Over the summer my mom found for me some glass paperweights at a yard sale. I have had them hanging around until this morning when I finally found the inspiration to fill them. They were easy to fill and turned out nicely. I think giving them for gifts this holiday season will be nice.

What you need:

empty glass paper weights
images or vintage fabric
thin cardboard to use as a template and backing
hot glue gun

I filled the paperweights with vintage photos and scraps of vintage
fabric (both of which I have a lot of laying around). You can use any
paper ephemera you have or any special image you like. First, make a template from thin cardboard hat fit snugly inside the paperweight. Next, lay the template on your fabric or photo and cut around it. Last, pop the photo or fabric inside the paperweight and run a thin bead of hot glue to seal in it.

I was lucky enough to source a vintage Catherineholm vintage lotus bowl last weekend! It is so beautiful. If it matched my decor, it would be staying with me! The bowl is a great size, great for fruit or serving a side at dinner. Made from an aqua blue enamel and printed with the iconic lotus pattern. It is in the [shop] now!
She picked a few for me when I was in Pennsylvania on Sunday. Back in DC I was wondering what to do with them and decided to try out [this] recipe.

Instead of using oregano, I used fresh thyme from my porch garden. The tomatoes were awesome, I loved the flavor and freshness of them! Next time I would love to add them to a grilled pizza with goat cheese and shallots. I think it would be perfect.

It wouldn't be summer without a batch of pesto! Fresh and green and so yummy. I made this particular batch with walnuts instead of pine nuts to try something new. The results were great! I did, however, add too much garlic, so I will be sure to cut it down to one clove instead of two next time. I adapted Martha Stewart's Every Day Food recipe found [here]and added lemon juice as well.

Today I did a quick afternoon DIY project. I found this metal umbrella stand at the thrift store yesterday for $4.99 Naturally, I scooped it up right away for that price and made a mental "to do" to pick up some cheap black spray paint. So, this morning I walked to my local hardware store and picked up a $2.49 can of matte black spray paint.

Back at home, I tapped off the top of the can where I didn't want the black paint to be. I could have been a little more creative here with the design, but I wanted to stay simple. After tapping off the top section of the can, I took it outside, placed it on a tarp, and lightly sprayed layer after layer of the paint onto the can using the same direction. (side to side)

In the end, I think it came out nicely. Next time, I would opt for the $3 more for better spray paint. But, me being thrifty for this project, I am happy with the total of $7.48!

Lately I have been working on some lovely lavender and flax seed goods. I have created a few lavender eye pillows. They are constructed from a linen filled pillow with dried organic french lavender and organic flax seed and then covered in salvaged vintage fabric covers. The results have been really fun. A cute patchwork look. You can find them in the shop now.
This afternoon as the dog and I went on a walk, we picked up some lovely sticks laying in Northwest Washington, DC. When we got home I set out my ombre (variegated) embroidery floss and choose my living room colors to create a pop of color for a shelf. So simple, 1. cover the sticks in embroidery floss 2. push into small stones in an interesting vintage canning jar and boom! 3. Color for a shelf.

I came across this recipe for pickled taco vegetables and was totally inspired the simple pickling process. I am sure they will be a great condiment for fish tacos.
The shop will be carrying a few new vintage necklaces with a tribal
theme this weekend! Two of the necklaces are a striking black and white
geometric theme. There is also a bright rainbow colored necklace made
from tons of tiny beads and lastly there is a great metallic triple
strand necklace with wooden beads.
My dad and I cut tree branches to size and then drilled a hole the size of a tea light in the center of the tree rings. It was freezing in his wood shop, but it was nice to work side by side with my dad.

I made two different sets. One from natural wood, a Bradford pear tree, and the other set is from reclaimed barn wood. Check for them in the shop now!
I have been very busy with my day job and sadly neglecting my "fun" job. Last weekend, on my thrift hunting in Washington DC, I came across this creature (or should I say creatures). A four pelt vintage mink stole! Love it or hate it, it is interesting...fint it in the shop now.
She has been laying on the boy's old bed pillow with no cover. [oh the horror] So, I took an ikea blanket that she has taken over recently and cut it to fit her pillow. I then added a little olive green ball trim, oh too cute! She ::loves:: it.
I moved last month and I am just now getting things back in order! There are some new finds in my vintage clothing shop and in my vintage home decor shop. Both shops are not as full as I would like them to be for this lovely change of seasons, but there are some nice finds available. There are barkcloth cocktail napkins, mid century modern knives, an adorable set of glitter deer for the holidays and some rhinestone jewelry!
I just made a lot of vintage linen cocktail and dinner napkins and found that I had a lot of scraps left over. Coming to the shop this afternoon are three [only three!] bundles of vintage scrap fabric. Full of florals and prints, these stacks are incredible!Find them [here]She Can't Decidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13592022768302387901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7749792869740974093.post-36751778445753386512012-08-03T10:52:00.001-07:002012-08-03T10:52:33.898-07:00Freezing Blueberries

I drink a fruit and Greek yogurt smoothie about five times a week. I swear it is why I have not been sick in over two years. I even shake my students hands as they enter my room every day, which is about 100 middle school kids, every day. So, I stand by the vitamins in this stuff!

I normally use about 1/3 cup of orange juice, a scoop of plain, non fat Greek yogurt and a cup and a half of frozen fruit. The combinations are endless. However, blueberries packaged and frozen and pretty expensive. So, when I saw a giant tub of them on sale at my grocery store this morning for $5, I scooped them up and decided to freeze them myself.

*Rinse your berries and pick over the "bad" mushy gooshy ones. Then lay on a towel to dry. When the berries are dry, place them on a baking sheet covered with a paper towel. Freeze for four hours and then transfer to a resealable freezer bag. Use a drinking straw and such out all of the air form the freezer bag and reseal. Freeze until you need it. Easy.
I always love coming across these handmade afghans. The white edged ones are by far my favorite, with brightly colored chevron stripes coming in at a close second. This granny square one is available in the shop this afternoon. She Can't Decidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13592022768302387901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7749792869740974093.post-84804714945484308302012-07-29T19:06:00.003-07:002012-07-29T19:06:32.945-07:00OliveSomeDay Update
I am finally listing some of the handmade fabric dinner napkins in the
shop this weekend! I already have listed two sets of cocktail sized
napkins and one set of dinner sized napkins. All are made from vintage
fabric and come in a set of 6. Each stack is tied with a kraft paper
band and a gold seal. Find them in the shop now.She Can't Decidehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13592022768302387901noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7749792869740974093.post-15390662281544102782012-07-25T11:33:00.000-07:002012-07-25T18:26:15.008-07:00Homemade Flat Bread

I saw on a friends Pinterest the other day, a flat bread recipe from the blog Smitten Kitchen. I used to read this blog very often in the past. but have not in quite a few months. As usual with anything you forget about, it inspires you all over again! So, this morning I made Rosemary and Olive Oil Flat Breads. They were very easy to make, made my kitchen smell great, and used up a nice amount of the fresh rosemary that I have been growing on my DC porch.

Here is a link to the recipe via Smitten Kitchen.
If you have been following my instagram you'll know that I have been sewing like a crazy person for two days now. I am making some very fun retro cocktail napkins to reopen the OliveSomeDay [shop] The ones pictured are from a piece of 1950s barkcloth with fantastic botanical designs. I also have some made from vintage sheet fabric in the prettiest blues and oranges. Make sure to stop back for shop updates.
